How to add Trigger.dev background tasks with Claude Code

Trigger.dev scores 4/5 on our Claude Code fit scale: official MCP server + skills with a one-line Claude Code installer; no official plugin (only an unmerged community PR: github.com/triggerdotdev/skills/pull/6). These steps use only Trigger.dev’s and Anthropic’s official instructions; each step links its source.

  1. 1

Have Claude Code and a Trigger.dev account ready

You need Claude Code installed and an account with Trigger.dev (trigger.dev). Some tools only need the account when the agent first calls a live tool.

  2. 2

    Add the Trigger.dev MCP server

Run this in Claude Code (or your terminal, as the source shows):

    npx trigger.dev@latest install-mcp --client claude-code

  3. 3

    Connect and verify

Run /mcp inside a Claude Code session to see connected servers, check status and complete sign-in where the server uses OAuth.

Then just ask

Example prompt (our suggestion, not from vendor docs):

“Help me add Trigger.dev background tasks in this project. Follow the Trigger.dev docs, keep secrets in environment variables, and show me the plan before changing files.”
